Successful community projects

Recently we completed the Ashfield Gardens Project, in partnership with Groundworks and Omagh District Council. Two sandstone monuments were created to mark the entrance to the regenerated Ashfield Garden Estate. A number of residents were involved in the construction, and engraving of the entrances through training provided at Mullaghmore including Health & Safety training. The residents assisted with the design, and simultaneously acquired new skills within the practical bases environment on wall contractions and stone lettering.

Residents took over ownership of the monument taking pride in their work and developing the area around it.

Another example of the versatility of the facilities at Mullaghmore is the Tyrone Donegal Partnership glass painting and card art class specifically for students with learning disabilities. The aim of the course was to bring people together from various communities and backgrounds to learn to value each others diverse qualities within our local area.

The group learned practical skills in glass painting, design, and left with a final piece of work.

Other community courses have been made in conjunction with Omagh College and such organisations as Manchester University of Arts and technology. With Omagh College students were invited to ‘Unlock the Artisan’, open to joinery students giving them a unique opportunity to work practically on original pieces of furniture, and within the joinery trade. Specialist Cabinet Making, Furniture building, and design and marketing were just some of the skills ascertained, as part of this business based training.

Manchester University students have studied at Mullaghmore in conjunction with their honours Degree Course in ‘Restoration & Conservation’. Again they were given the opportunity to learn practical hands on skills in a genuine established business environment.
